Ridge and hip tiles sit along the top and corners of the roof on a bed of mortar. Over the years that mortar cracks and washes out, and one windy night a ridge tile ends up in the garden. Gable ends have the same problem along the verge, where the mortar between the tiles and the wall gives way.
We re-bed ridge and hip tiles in fresh mortar, or fit a dry ridge system that is mechanically fixed and needs no mortar at all. On gable ends we fit dry verge, which closes the edge of the roof with clipped caps instead of mortar.
Loose ridges let water straight into the roof, so we treat them as a repair to do soon, not later.
