Mortar is meant to be the sacrificial part of a wall. Over time it erodes, the joints open and rain gets into the brickwork, which is how damp, frost damage and loose bricks start. The worst affected walls are usually the highest and most exposed: chimney stacks, gable ends and parapets.
We rake out the failed mortar to a proper depth, then repoint with a mortar matched to the age and colour of the brick. On older London brickwork that often means a lime mortar rather than hard cement, which lets the wall breathe.
